made an effort to move my fursona/oc playlists off of evil corporation Spotify and are now hosted by totally unproblematic and forever corp Youtube-Alphabet

🌿🐆🌸 Amaryllis (Deerhoof, Stereolab, The Specials, Chelmico, and more)

🔪🍖🐺💦 Rillette (Paco de Lucia, Kimya Dawson. Islands, Wilbur Sargunaraj, and more)

specifically hearing this cover earlier in the week for the first time i knew it had to slot into a primo seat in the ammy rotation. we fucking love the güiro don't we folks!!!!!!!!!

It might be the hoarder in me but having mp3s and stuff and not streaming music feels so much better... But anything's better than Spotify in particular.

earlier this year i've "re-started" an mp3 collection, ostensibly at the start for stream bgm collection but getting back into a bit of recreational slsk'ing has been good for me every now and again, though. i am not immune to the 'shareability' and 'on-demand' aspects of the modern stream-style platforms as 'daily drivers', though, i fear!

anyway this weekend i'm in one of those moods where i think sepultura - roots is one of the five most important albums ever made again. "drummers" are so cool

my library is a disorganised mess as everything i've torrented goes into a big \MUSIC\ directory without changing the tags etc because i am too cheap for a seedbox

so i am probably making more work for myself than i need to but the ritual of deliberately dragging of mp3s onto my phone feels meaningful
keep on crunglin'....

i very recently managed to finally kick spotify and it has been so satisfying! i kind of forgot how much i love music and exploring and downloading albums...a kind of a magic is lost when i had a big branded corporate player that consolidated everything. spotify's discoverability was very convenient as well but i'm now instead patiently listening through entire discographies of random songs i had 'hearted' and discovering new favorites.

a friend turned me onto a yellow magic orchestra offshoot called testpattern and i've been listening to the whole album once a day.

then while cleaning up my spotify likes i found this electronic artist tanzmuzik that i honestly had never heard of before in my life but i guess i saved an album cause i liked the cover art??? also the first instance of me being completely unable to find an album online and having to ask a friend to track it down on a private tracker...

I saw your post and it helped me finally kick spotify too after many, many years! It's something that I've been meaning to do. As you say it's convenient but that comes at some price, I used to be very much into albums. It was the primary way in which I listened to music, and slowly with Spotify I moved towards songs in general... which is fine I guess but most of the music I love is album oriented anyway. And also as artistic statements or pieces of art, I found albums to be super interesting, they are a bit more demanding of your time and attention sure but it's rewrding to study and analize them.
Anyway, I'll look for a bluetooth mp3 that I can use for the car which is the main concern right now and hopefully I can begin re-discovering all that musical I went through journey with Soulseek over the years.

I've never liked spotify personally but that's mostly from the perspective of expecting people to pay for ad free listening. If the baseline user experience is bad, then I don't think any tier of it is worth it. As far as albums and playlists are concerned, I think it's pretty easy to manage both. There's a lot of value to curation and I wouldn't say it outright threatens the full album experience. More of an aside. They're fantastic for branching out. A song stands out to you > you find the album > you find the artist > then you can possibly find their influences. That's so much music right there that can strengthen the connection to the artist. And they're great exercises to create as sort of a summation of experiences. The problem is more on algorithms filtering out tons of potential songs/projects because of an arbitrary numbers game. If you're interested in written pieces on music, there's stuff like The Quietus that can throw names at you. There's also websites like theshfl that you might enjoy. Radio Garden is great too, but doesn't usually list names. The best way to explore new music is to ignore your taste. Knowing what you enjoy affects how you react to new material and can limit what you allow yourself to listen to.

Been listening to a lot of Mass of the Fermenting Dregs, a J-rock band that wikipedia describes as "post-hardcore". I'm not that far deep in the genre weeds to say if that's accurate, but I would describe them as "good" and "fun". I used to just hit shuffle on a bunch of songs but lately I find myself just looking to put on an album and MotFD is great for that.

A lot of it has been one of their post-reformation albums, Awakening:Sleeping. It's p good imo. Huge shoutouts to the track combo of 1960 into Helluva. 1960 being an 8+ minute bass driven cruise down the road before Helluva turns it into mad max.

I also had the opportunity to see them live back in 2023 in a packed 150 person room and they are awesommmme.

for music discovering i really enjoy https://www.nts.live/ for the novelty of "humans picking music". i pay a sub mostly for the track-listing but it's a bit spotty

i was at this same concert with nimmy despite not being too familiar with the band and was having a pretty good time until they started playing '1960' and i was absolutely warped to the goodtime motorik dimension helllllll yes

if you want "human curated music" in this day and age, seattle-based radio station "KEXP" is as good as you can get in the 'american indie/college music station' genre in 2025 and has robust internet listings and casting. i should donate this year https://www.kexp.org/

heard this one on a kexp cover songs block a month or so ago i fucking love a good cover song
