[I want to put image here what image hosts do people even use now???]
Here's what you need to know
What is Blood on the Clocktower?
Game for goth nerds who go to boardgame cafes (but its werewolf but designed for more exciting real time play and like everyone having a fun role basically)
Do I have to understand anything going on to play this?
No!! I didn't when I played it it's fine it's only really complicated for the STORYTELLER (as the game runner is called) and every role essentially comes with its own small mission to focus on doing (and I will send out little strategy tips for the roles you get assigned)
A very short form strategy guide is:
-Good players want to connect and find people they trust so they can start building reliable information
-Good players benefit from truths being spread and realising that statistically speaking you can probably believe people telling you stuff
-Evil players benefit from spreading falsehoods and depending on their role either playing up how suspicious they are as a diversion from the true evil or acting as a normal helpful townsfolk until it's too late for the town to stop them
If it's supposed to be good for real time play how is it going to work on a forum and why not use the official online play app???
Well I'd like to try the online play out for sure but I thought a little daily update type game might be fun and I feel reasonably sure I can adapt it mostly not awkwardly
So anyway I need something between like 6-21 players with the nice sweet spot being in the sort of 9-14 range but less or more is still workable (there's a mini version for like 5 people but I can't see it being as cool) (there's also roles specifically for people who need to leave early or turn up late and get integrated into the game halfway through which rocks)
Here is how it works basically:
Everyone gets a role, some of those roles are evil, the good guys want to get rid of the evil guys by voting them out once a day and the evil guys want to survive and kill the good guys with their one kill a day power
The game just goes through cycles where during Day Phase everyone gets to talk and bluff and whisper to eachother and look at eachother and go I think you're a wrongun m8 and then someone is executed and then Night Phase where everyone secretly uses their powers on targets of their choice and then you wake up in Day Phase again and find out stuff that happened at night
Executions work in the normal game by sitting everyone down and letting people do nominations (you get to make one per day and every person can only be nominated once as well) and then people quickly take turns voting for if they should die, the person with the most votes (above 50% of the player count) that day gets executed and if its the Demon then the good team wins
(I think I'm going to translate that into letting nominations just happen during the talking all day phase to make it work in play by post format but I will ask around my nerd group to see if anyone knows about already existing rule adaptations for this sort of thing)
Important extra point - dead people are not removed from chatting and can keep playing like normal they just lose their character ability, can't nominate for execution and may only vote once more
There's actually currently three official scenarios for this game which are:
Trouble Brewing - the most baby noob friendly and most werewolf/mafia resembling version
Sects & Violets - bonkers asshole game where everyone is OP
Bad Moon Rising - everyone dies and revives all the damn time and its more about figuring out what type of Demon is killing you and countering it
I'll just post the Trouble Brewing roles in here to give people an idea of what this forum game one will involve:
Townsfolk (Good Guys):
Washerwoman - You start the game being told a Townsfolk character and 2 players, 1 of which is playing that character
Librarian - You start the game being told an Outsider character and 2 players, 1 of which is playing that character (if there are no Outsiders you are told this instead)
Investigator - You start the game being told a Minion character and 2 players, 1 of which is playing that character
Chef - You start the game knowing how many pairs of Evil Players there are (pairs here meaning that they are sitting next to each other in the circle)
Empath - Every night you are told if 0, 1 or 2 of the people sitting next to you in the circle are Evil
Fortune Teller - Every night you choose two players and receive a yes or no answer to the question "are either of them the Demon" (one player in the game will also give false positives)
Undertaker - Every night you are told the character of the player who was executed
Monk - Each night you pick a player other than yourself to make immune to Demon attack
Ravenkeeper - If you die at night (so execution doesn't count) you get to pick a player and learn their character
Virgin - The 1st time in the game someone nominates you for execution, if they are a Townsfolk or the Spy they are executed immediately (using up that days execution)
Slayer - Once per game you may announce you are the Slayer and choose a person to attack, if they are the Demon they die (note that anyone can claim to be anything up to and including announcing they are using the Slayers power even if they aren't the Slayer which will simply mechanically look the same as a real Slayer choosing the wrong person)
Soldier - You cannot be killed by the Demon
Mayor - A weird one who creates and alternate good guy win condition of having 3 living players left and having no execution that day
Outsiders (Characters on the Good Team who are a bit of a liability):
Butler - Picks a Master every night, can only vote for people their Master is already voting for
Saint - If you are killed by execution the Good Team loses
Recluse - If anyone uses a power to determine your identity you may read as Evil but not always
Drunk - You believe yourself to be one of the normal Townsfolk roles and will be asked to use your powers as normal except they won't work or will give you wrong information
Minions (Characters on the Evil Team who help the Demon and start out knowing who it is):
Poisoner - Choose a player each night to disable or muddle the abilities of
Spy - You get to see everyone's roles and the Storyteller's notes on them, you also may register as an Outsider or Townsfolk to identity checks
Baron - Adds 2 extra Outsiders in play
Scarlet Woman - If the Demon dies you become the Demon
Demon:
Imp - Every night you choose a player to kill, you can use this to kill yourself and turn one of your Minions into the Demon (this differs from Scarlet Woman in that she replaces you if you die in any way but without her this is your only means of passing your power on)
Obviously not every one of these roles will be present in every game and in face the Demon and the Spy will be made aware of which roles aren't present allowing them to effectively pick a character to pretend to be
So yeah, posting all this to see if people are interested in a little forums gaming uhuhu
